Before the next session, have a go at doing this goal setting task in your journal. By practising goal setting using examples it will make it easier for when you plan your own goals.

1. We would like you to help Ben make an action plan using SMART.

Many people with scars or skin conditions worry about showing their skin in public. Some go as far as wearing thick coats and jumpers in the middle of summer.

End Goal:
  • Wearing shorts in the summer.

1. How would you turn this example into a goal that is specific? (Where will Ben be when he wears his shorts and how long should he wear them for?)

2. Can you make it measurable? (Will Ben know when he’s completed his goal?)

3. Is the goal achievable? (Do you think there is any reason why Ben can’t wear shorts?)

4. Is this reasonable for Ben? (Do you think Ben would be happy to wear shorts in the park immediately?)

Write an action plan for Ben with 2 or 3 smaller goals that he can achieve on his way to the end goal of wearing shorts?

Set Ben a Time frame for achieving these goals. Look at the swimming example to give you ideas.
